Wynne Construction was appointed by Anglesey County Council to design and build a new primary school, situated at the existing Ysgol Cybi site in Holyhead. The project included a new two-storey development and the refurbishment of the existing listed Cybi building.
The new £9m school, accommodates 540 pupils with 70 nursery pupils who will benefit from the latest facilities and resources to include modern and well equipped classrooms and suitable outdoor areas for play and learning. The project was part funded by the Welsh Government through the 21st Century Schools Programme
The school is one of the first in North Wales to adopt Building Information Modelling (BIM) to the full level 2 standard, which allows designers and constructors to work collaboratively to streamline and accurately model a construction project before work starts on site.
The school is constructed to BREEAM Excellent standards. BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised measures of a building's environmental performance.
A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building's specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.
This project has adopted several approaches to achieving the score of Excellent and to construct a very energy efficient building, including:

"It is an honour to be Ysgol Cybi's first headteacher, and the children of Holyhead are very fortunate to have such a wonderful building. The team from Wynne's have been a pleasure to work with since my appointment to the role. They listened attentively to any queries, concerns or ideas that I had about the building and the way we'd use it, and were always ready to offer solutions.
The end result is a building of the highest quality, and a school environment that is second to none - the classrooms are spacious and well-designed, the circulation areas are pleasant areas to spend time in, and the outdoor areas offer a wealth of educational opportunities with resources such as amphitheatres, games areas and gardening zones. Thank you to the whole team at Wynne Construction."
