Wynne reinvests in North Wales economy

Wynne Construction has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the region's economy following contract wins in 2015 worth £56m.

Around 80 per cent of the value of contracts will remain in North Wales through investment in training, apprenticeships and its locally-based supply chain.

The third generation family-owned company uses more than 250 local SMEs as approved supply-chain partners and has provided approximately 375 hours of training to its workforce in the last 12 months, including further education qualifications up to degree level.

Wynne Construction's recent contract awards include five significant educational projects: the new build Post 16 Education Hub in Deeside for Coleg Cambria, the new Ysgol Hafod Lon Newydd in Penrhyndeudraeth, the refurbishment and new extension for Ysgol Cybi primary school in Holyhead, the new Ysgol Gwenfro project in Wrexham and a new area school for Bala.

Other projects outside of the education sector include Edge Transport's new distribution centre at Deeside and the redevelopment of the former Hotpoint site in Bodelwyddan on behalf of Welsh Government.

Managing director Chris Wynne said: "2015 has been an excellent year for Wynne Construction. Our focus on investing in our workforce and developing an excellent local supply chain have been crucial to our success.

"Our programme to give the workforce access to training and skills development has significantly helped our retention rate. More than 75 per cent of our employees have worked for us for five years or more. Our low staff turnover rate has no doubt helped us to win and deliver work.

"We are also leading the way with innovation and new technology, including implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) standards well ahead of Welsh Government target dates."

The focus on staff development was championed by Chris's father Maldwyn, the previous managing director, who sadly passed away in May of this year. Chris said: "My father was a dedicated advocate of training the local community and offering sustainable employment. This philosophy is central to our future growth plans.

"We passionately promote the construction industry as a career, and using our own construction ambassadors, work with local schools and colleges to ensure young people are aware of the variety of opportunities available in the construction industry.

"We firmly believe in supporting local suppliers in their growth and development, which in turn has a positive effect on their contribution to our projects across North Wales and Cheshire.

"Our approach keeps us ahead of our competitors and helps us to deliver high-quality work on time and to budget for our clients."

Wynne Construction supports and engages the communities it operates in, and runs a community fund in support of worthy causes across North Wales, such as a gardening project at Pwllheli Leisure Centre. In the last twelve months the Company has also held more than 40 community engagement events.

Other significant projects undertaken by Wynne Construction include the Welsh National Sailing and Events Centre in Pwllheli; the High Growth Business Centre for the University of Chester; and a renal department extension for Ysbyty Gwynedd.
