Pupils and parents learn about primary school now under construction

Work is now well under way to build an island's latest new primary school. Wynne Construction has started on the main structure of the £5.5m Ysgol Santes Dwynwen primary school in Newborough, Anglesey.

The state-of-the-art facility will replace four village primary schools, including the existing Newborough school, situated across the road from the new build.

And Wynne Construction staff, along with Anglesey Council representatives, have held community events so that parents, children and other local residents could find out more about their modern new resource.

To be built from timber panelling, with Welsh slate roofing to its main hall, kitchen and main entrance area, the single-storey building will contain nine classrooms. It will cater for a total of 180 pupils, together with nursery provision and a Flying Start unit.

The programme of work is scheduled to finish in March 2019. Wynne Construction is developing the scheme to meet the global standard BREEAM 'Excellent', which evaluates best practice for the environmental performance through design, specification, construction and operation.

Parents and children met with the team and found out about the facilities inside, as well as the modern techniques and materials being used for construction.

Wynne Construction managing director, Chris Wynne, said: "Work is progressing well. There has been a great deal of interest from local people already, and we enjoyed meeting the families to answer their questions about the new school."

Ysgol Santes Dwynwen is being partly funded by the Welsh Government through the 21st Century Schools Programme, and is part of the £200m schools and public buildings contractor framework for North Wales.
