New centre at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay

Wynne Construction has been awarded the design and build project on behalf of Conwy County Borough Council, the Welsh Assembly Strategic Regeneration Area fund and the Welsh Rugby Union.

The project, situated at Parc Eirias in Colwyn Bay, involves the construction of a large multi-purpose indoor centre designed for use by all the community and includes conference and classroom facilities for business and commerce events. Along with a gym and high performance sports analysis facilities, the Welsh Rugby Union will be basing its North Wales Rugby Academy at the centre. The work will also contribute to the stadium achieving Category A status for athletics events.

The development is designed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards and is due for completion in September 2011.

Commenting on the project, Chris Wynne, Managing Director says: "We are delighted to have been awarded this project and to be working on a key element in the regeneration of the Colwyn Bay area. Parc Eirias further secures the employment of our existing workforce and enable us to offer employment to a number of skilled workers in the area."

Cllr Graham Rees, Conwy County Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Corporate Modernisation said, "After months of intensive work by the Project Team and the Project Board, who have been meeting on a weekly basis, I am delighted that the construction work at Parc Eirias is now underway and the project is on schedule for completion in September."

The total cost of the project is £6.5 million, which is being funded by £3.8m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Welsh Assembly Government Targeted Match Fund. Funding has also been secured from the Welsh Assembly Government Strategic Regeneration Area fund, Conwy County Borough Council and the Welsh Rugby Union.

The project is a key part of the Bay Life+ regeneration initiative for the Colwyn area and, along with major coastal defence works about to start on Colwyn Bay promenade, refurbishment of Theatr Colwyn and other property improvements within the town will play an important part in the regeneration of the area.
