Wynne Construction has been awarded the contract to build the new £4.2m Welsh National Sailing Academy and Events Centre in Pwllheli, Gwynedd. Following the completion of the marine works within the harbour, the construction phase of the project will provide a centre in Pwllheli for national and international sailing events along with indoor/outdoor facilities for the local community as a whole.
The project has received financial support European Convergence Programme, Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council. In order to develop the Academy Gwynedd Council has worked in partnership with Pwllheli Sailing Club, Welsh Government, North Wales Watersports, Plas Menai, Coleg Llandrillo (Cymru) and the Welsh Yachting Association.
The National Sailing Academy and Events Centre building will comprise a main hall for sailing and community uses, training and educational rooms as well as catering facilities. It will provide excellent land-based facilities, in an iconic building, to complement the world class sailing waters of Cardigan Bay. With the promise of attracting thousands of new visitors to the area every year, construction of the Sailing Academy and Events Centre is due to commence in May 2014, with the facility scheduled to be open by Easter 2015.
Councillor John Wynn Jones, Gwynedd Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Economy said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Wynne Construction on such a high profile project.
"The company has a strong reputation for employing local workers and supporting local contractors, and we are looking forward to working with them to implement the community benefits incorporated into the contract to make sure that the local workforce and local businesses make the most of this major investment in the local area.
"We envisage that the project will bring long term economic and community benefits to Pwllheli and surrounding area."
Chris Wynne, Managing Director of Wynne Construction said, "As an established firm in North Wales, we are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract. Our proven experience in this field equips us to deliver the project to a high standard, providing Gwynedd Council and the community of Pwllheli with first-class facilities for sailing and outdoor activities.
The project will also enable us to offer employment to a number of skilled workers in the area, as well as affording valuable opportunities for the future. The project has been widely welcomed by the local community and we are looking forward to starting."
