Work starts on the National Sailing Academy in Pwllheli

Building work has started on a £4 million project to build the Pwllheli Sailing Academy building that will complete the package of recent capital investments in the town's harbour area.

The first sod of turf has been broken on the site of Wales' National Sailing Academy at Glan Don, Pwllheli. This building is a key part of the £8.3 million package secured by Gwynedd Council to strengthen the local maritime and sailing industry.

The Pwllheli National Sailing Academy and Events Centre has received financial support from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council.

The iconic building will be a centre to host events and some of the world's best sailing competitions. It will also be a central asset to the local community and the outdoor industry in Pwllheli and surrounding area.

North Wales company, Wynne Construction won the contract to carry out the work which is expected to be completed by summer 2015.

Councillor John Wynn Jones, Gwynedd Council's Economy Cabinet Member said:

"As a Council, we are proud in what Pwllheli has to offer to the leisure and outdoor industry and recognise that the National Sailing Academy is essential to strengthen this industry for the benefit of the local community and economy.

"The Academy building will be a valuable resource for the local community - as a centre for the community to use as well as including modern facilities that will be of benefit to local residents and visitors to the area."

Stephen Tudor, Plas Heli Cyf Chairman, the voluntary body that has been established to run the resource, added:

"This is a very important milestone with years of work being realised. This is a very exciting project for Pwllheli's future.

"Following months of development and consultation work, the package of work connected to this project is now complete, with significant work to dredge the harbour and place new mooring already completed within the harbour."
