Post 16 Education Centre - Contract Award

Wynne Construction has been awarded the multi-million pound contract to build the new Post 16 Education Centre, being jointly developed by Coleg Cambria and Flintshire County Council. The new centre will provide state-of-the-art facilities and a broader curriculum of choice for Post 16 learners in Flintshire and is due to open in September 2016.

The scheme is part of the Welsh Government's £200m Schools and Public Buildings Contractor Framework for North Wales and forms part of Flintshire's planned investment in their schools under Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools and Education Programme. This is a £1.4 billion investment programme that will invest in over 150 schools and colleges across Wales over the next five years.

With an overall cost of £14m, the new facility will provide an inspirational learning experience for up to 700 students in a centralised location between Coleg Cambria's Deeside site and Connah's Quay High School. The three-storey building includes specialist performing arts, music, science and creative arts facilities as well as general teaching classrooms and social and private study spaces. Accessed from a newly formed entrance from Golftyn Lane, the scheme includes staff and visitor car parking as well as a coach park area to serve the wider Coleg Cambria site.

The highly sustainable building will also promote the use of natural daylight and natural ventilation within whilst also incorporating a number of sustainable technologies including air source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and rainwater harvesting.

We are really pleased that the work for this exciting new centre will be carried out by a North Wales company as it ensures employment opportunities for local staff and contractors and contributes to the success of the economy in the area.

"The hub, which will be open to students in September 2016, will provide a learning environment that takes advantage of new technology and uses sustainable technology offering enhanced curriculum options and experiences for young people in North East Wales."

Councillor Chris Bithell, Flintshire County Council's Cabinet member for Education said: "Over recent years, Flintshire County Council has worked effectively in partnership with Wynne Construction to deliver a number of projects including Ysgol Pen Coch and Ysgol Maes Hyfryd in Flint.

"We know from experience that Wynne Construction share our commitment to keeping as much of the benefit of such projects in the local economy by employing as many local contractors and staff on their projects as possible and supporting local businesses in their supply chains."
