Wynne Construction has secured an £11.7 million design and build contract to redevelop a Denbigh-based primary school.

Appointed by Denbighshire County Council, the family-owned firm aims to consolidate Ysgol Pendref’s existing provision, which operates across two buildings 50 metres apart, into a single structure for teaching and learning.

Proposals include creating a dedicated infant and childcare facility as well as a new hall and kitchen.

Subject to approval, plans also under consideration include demolishing the existing junior school either in part or in full, levelling the infant school, and installing a new car park.

Wynne Construction is advancing the design stage of the scheme, which is part of the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, to inform the final look of the refurbishment and extension works.

David Jones, Wynne Construction design manager, said: “We’re proud to be working alongside Denbighshire County Council once again to progress this highly anticipated development.

“With our track record of delivering projects in the education sector, including the Glasdir Schools scheme (Ysgol Pen Barras and Rhos Street School), Ysgol Carreg Emlyn, and Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, I’m confident our team will complete the redevelopment to a high standard.

“As a Bodelwyddan-based business, it’s also brilliant to be providing an upgraded facility for our local community here in Denbighshire.”

Geraint Davies, head of education at Denbighshire County Council, said: “This project will bring a significant investment to upper Denbigh, bringing support families and children within their community.

“This next step is step closer to bringing new, high-quality building and education facilities for the pupils at Ysgol Pendref.”

Nicola Griffiths, Ysgol Pendref headteacher, said: “This next phase in the project is a step closer to bringing a new, high-quality building and education facilities for the pupils at Ysgol Pendref.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the designs being further developed for the project.”
