BIM, Sustainability, Low Carbon

Wynne Construction has been appointed by Cardiff Council to deliver a new Specialist Resource Base (SRB) at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, named as Canolfan Ethni – a landmark investment in Welsh-medium education for pupils with Additional Learning Needs.

Funded through Welsh Government’s Welsh Medium grant, this purpose-built extension will provide tailored support for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Complex Learning Needs (CLN). The development is designed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that reflects the Welsh holistic curriculum while fostering community engagement.

The SRB will include a shared community space, a learning kitchen and café, and access to a new performance hall, offering opportunities for creativity and collaboration. Dedicated drama and performance areas will inspire confidence and communication, while sensory-friendly zones and adaptable furniture will ensure every pupil’s needs are met.

Innovation and sustainability are at the heart of the project. The design incorporates low-carbon construction methods, energy-efficient materials, and strategies to reduce environmental impact. Digital integration through BIM technology will support precision during construction and simplify future maintenance. Safety and accessibility have been prioritised with specialist acoustic treatments, crime prevention measures, and inclusive access routes.

Beyond the school day, the facilities will be available for shared community use, strengthening local engagement and creating a space that benefits everyone.
