Site Visit from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor

Students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, based in Dolgellau, who are studying NVQ Level 2 in Site Carpentry, had the opportunity to visit our construction site in Penrhyndeudrath. Wynne Construction is currently building the £13m new school for pupils with special educational needs from the Meirionnydd and Dwyfor areas of the county, consisting of modern and well equipped classrooms, a hydrotherapy pool and outdoor areas for play and learning.

In addition to the main school, the project includes a six-bed residential Respite Centre which has been designed and constructed utilising a timber frame supplied by Powys-based company Lowfield Timber Frames. The students were given a talk by Denis Hillier of Lowfield, who explained the process involved of taking the timber frame design from conception through to installation which has taken around six weeks. Timber frames provide a cost-effective and efficient solution for construction projects.

The students are also studying Health, Safety and Welfare and were given a site induction by our site manager, Ian Williams and provided with PPE before visiting the timber frame and having a tour of the site.

The students commented how much was involved prior to the start of the build and are keen to follow the progress of the project. Meirion Edwards of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor said: “Site experiences for our students provide an important role in the curriculum, and we are fortunate to have visited during the installation of the timber frame and to see first-hand the process involved. We look forward to continue with our educational activities with Wynne.”

We have worked on a number of projects utilising SIPS and timber frame construction processes and it is useful for the students to have an insight into our operations.”
