Top of the class: Wynne Construction unveils primary school in South Wales

Wynne Construction is helping provide first-class education to students in South Wales after successfully finalising works on the £16m Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llyn y Forwyn school.

The Bodelwyddan-based firm has transformed the former Chubb factory site into an energy efficient building fitted with made-to-measure structural insulated panels (SIP) designed to regulate the school’s temperature.

Further prioritising sustainability, the development saw air source heat pumps installed throughout, helping reduce its carbon emissions and contributing to the Welsh Government’s net-zero by 2050 target.

The site can accommodate 270 pupils and features facilities including a multi-use games area (MUGA), a grass sports pitch, and external play areas, as well as collection/drop-off and staff car parks.

To encourage active travel, visiting the school by foot or bike has also been made easier through the construction of a dedicated access area complete with a steel-framed ramp that creates a direct route for people entering from the main road.  

In addition, for parents and carers with children aged two to five, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llyn y Forwyn offers spaces for 30 youngsters to strengthen their Welsh language skills at its Cylch Meithrin playgroup.

Wynne Construction director Steve Davies said: “It was our first time delivering a project for Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, and I’m pleased to say that our working relationship has gone from strength to strength.

“Moreover, building the eco-conscious school was a very rewarding experience and we made sure to engage with South Wales businesses to boost the local economy

and reduce our carbon emissions by ensuring the suppliers did not have to travel far to reach the site.

“Overall, I’m proud of our team’s tenacity and dedication to complete the project to a high standard and overcome the many challenges encountered due to the nature of the existing site.”

Wynne Construction social value manager Paula Lunnon said: “We are always looking to give back to the communities we work with, so being able to provide a quality build to Ferndale is brilliant and we hope the students and staff will enjoy the new facilities.

“Moreover, we’ve been able to welcome 11 apprentices on site through the shared Y Prentis scheme as well as offer seven work experience placements in partnership with RCT Borough Council to those facing long-term unemployment, ultimately giving people a real taste of what sustainable construction looks like.”

The Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llyn y Forwyn development was funded by the Welsh Government Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.
