“We’re doing a lot for net zero, but we could do more” – Wynne Construction director speaks on developing green skills
One of Wynne Construction’s directors has shared the realities of cutting carbon emissions as a Welsh business.
Richard Wynne was invited by leading publication Wales Business Insider to take part in a national net zero skills roundtable, where leaders spoke on the steps they are taking, how they are upskilling their workforce, and the challenges faced.
Richard offered his insight on investing in the next generation, the feasibility of incorporating net zero into contract bids, and called for diversification surrounding measuring climate targets.
He said: “It was a pleasure to discuss our plans with representatives from a range of sectors and I found there is clear overlap on what we are facing, whether working in construction and engineering, professional services, or tourism.
“Taking your workforce on your sustainability journey by providing the correct training and support was a prominent topic, as well as incentivising the next generation to develop green skills.
“With cuts to apprenticeship schemes, we are working hard to get young people enthusiastic and engaged with sustainable construction methods and raising awareness of their significance.”
As part of its work to design and build Wrexham University’s Enterprise, Engineering, and Optics Centre, the firm has delivered talks to current architectural and design technology undergraduates, offering insight on how it will aid with the transition toward net zero.
In addition, the company has ensured all electricity consumed at its company offices in Bodelwyddan is renewably sourced by implementing a green electric tariff and installing 58 photovoltaic panels on the building’s roof.
Richard added: “We’re keen to cut emissions across all areas of our business, while educating clients and the future workforce on the Welsh government’s objectives.
“Participating in collaborative events by exchanging ideas and talking openly about the challenges faced is a great opportunity to help us take steps towards achieving our shared goals and ensuring companies are receiving the right support.”
