Doors open at new Ysgol Corn Hir

Pupils can now enjoy a new modern primary school on the Isle of Anglesey.

Wynne Construction has completed work on the major redevelopment of Ysgol Corn Hir in Llangefni, with the school now open to students.
We were appointed by the council to design and build the school, which is situated opposite the Bryn Meurig housing estate on the B5109 road.
Replacing the existing school building, the new Ysgol Corn Hir provides space for 270 pupils aged 4 to 11 across 10 classrooms, as well as an additional nursery classroom and childcare unit. In addition, we have built infrastructure with a potential for future expansion as Llangefni grows, with communal areas such as the school hall and dining room able to be reconfigured to further increase capacity.

Graham Dickson, our contracts manager, said: “It has been fantastic to work once again with the Isle of Anglesey County Council to build the new Ysgol Corn Hir and deliver state-of-the-art facilities for the staff and pupils in Llangefni. The team is passionate about delivering high-quality builds which can transform educational goals for students as well as provide a boost to the wider community. Developing an environmentally efficient school, which will also grow with Llangefni, was key for this project. Ysgol Corn Hir is a shining example of a modern, sustainable school, and we look forward to seeing the impact our work helps bring to the area in the future.”

Larger and more energy-efficient classrooms built as part of the development will maximise natural light and ventilation, with the building incorporating a natural ventilation system to allow for fresh air flow. In addition, as part of our sustainability commitments, photovoltaic panels on the roof and air source heat pumps have been installed to reduce environmental harm and ongoing operational costs for the school.

The £10m project, which was funded by the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, forms a significant part of the council’s wider school modernisation programme.

Councillor Ieuan Williams, Anglesey’s cabinet member for education and Welsh language, said, “I am delighted to see another exciting new education project realised on Anglesey. We are using Welsh Government funding to invest in new school buildings which are fit for purpose, in the right place, meet pupils’ needs, and become a resource which communities can fully utilise. The new Ysgol Corn Hir is another fine example of what can be achieved. Its development has also led to significant investment in Llangefni – not only in terms of new infrastructure, but more importantly as a means of ensuring the very best education for children attending the new school.”

It’s an exciting time in the school’s history. A new, modern and fit-for-purpose building will ensure the best facilities and environment for our children. We can now build further on our exciting plans for the new curriculum. We are extremely grateful that the county council – its officers and elected members – have worked hard to secure a school that will serve the area for many generations to come.”
