Wynne Construction has underlined its commitment to staff by becoming the first organisation in Wales to sign the Gambling Related Harms Workplace Charter.

We have joined forces with Ara Recovery For All, who deliver free and confidential support to individuals facing challenges with gambling help across Wales and the South West. As part of the charter, Wynne Construction will adhere to a comprehensive framework for action which comprises seven commitments.

They confirm that the company will:

  • Make a commitment
  • Build the approach
  • Promote a positive culture
  • Support and train
  • Provide the right support
  • Help people to recover
  • Seek parity and handle issues with sensitivity

Wynne Construction social value manager Alison Hourihane expressed pride at the support on offer to address certain issues with the help of Ara Recovery for All.

She said: “Supporting the health and wellbeing of our workforce is of utmost importance to us as a company, and this is why we are proud to sign the workplace charter. We recognise that gambling can become a significant problem for some, and that many find it hard to be open about it with those closest to them, and often their employer for fear of losing their job. By signing this charter, we commit to adopting a support-first approach to enable us to sensitively help any colleagues struggling with harmful gambling.”

Figures from the Gambling Commission indicate an increase in people suffering from betting problems.

As much as 2.5 per cent – up from 0.3 per cent – of the adult British population may be struggling, with harmful gambling contributing to workplace absences that cost businesses and the national economy more than £1.27 billion annually.

Marc Skinner, Ara’s community engagement manager for North Wales, added: “On behalf of Ara Recovery for All I am proud to be partnering with Wynne Construction, the first organisation in Wales to sign the Gambling Related Harms Workplace Charter. Employees are the lifeblood of any organisation. Their health and wellbeing are central to its sustainability. By signing the Gambling Related Harms Workplace Charter, Wynne Construction is showing its commitment to employees by building a framework of support that allows them to make healthier choices and overcome problems with gambling behaviour.”

On the day of the signing, Ara community engagement lead Matt Losing delivered two talks to on-site workers in Bangor. They helped shine a light on the significance of the charter in terms of breaking the stigma associated with gambling harms within workplace environments. Both locations, Plas Penrhos and Pen Y Ffridd, where the charter was signed, are being built to deliver social housing for Adra.
