Wynne Construction is celebrating “Apprenticeship Week Wales” and “National Apprenticeship Week” from 9th – 15th February, to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Aspiring joiner, Harrison Jones is undertaking his joinery apprenticeship as he helps to advance the £15.8m orthopaedic hub at Llandudno Hospital.

The Denbighhire-native first heard about the four-year-long scheme whilst undertaking a foundation course at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai.

Determined to build upon his classroom teaching, the 18-year-old has since completed nearly four months of on-site work complemented by attending lessons at the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus.

He said: “Practical, hands-on learning has always suited me better, so it’s great to have the chance to engage in this style of training on such a major project.

“I’m enjoying my time as an apprentice so far, and everyone on the team is supportive, which makes for a brilliant working environment, as there are always people around to help explain things if needed.

“With my dad’s role as a property developer, I have previous experience in helping fit kitchens but haven’t done anything on this scale before, so it’s all new and exciting and I look forward to what’s next.”

Thinking long term, Harrison is ambitious to continue enhancing his skillset with Wynne Construction and has expressed a desire to establish his own business later down the line.

Wynne Construction site manager Dafydd Williams said: “It’s fantastic to hear such positive feedback from apprentices like Harrison and to see what a difference the programme is making to advance their careers.

“A complex scheme like Llandudno is also ideal for giving learners a real-life taste of how to effectively manage project delivery on a busy, live site, as all members of staff must work together effectively to ensure they not only deliver quality work but are extra cautious when operating.”
