Completion: Kings Moat Primary School, Chester

Wynne Construction has completed the £8m Kings Moat Community Primary School, Chester, ready for the start of the academic year in September 2026.

The family-owned firm, was appointed by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) on a design and build contract, to deliver the two-storey new school build in the centre of the 1,300-home Kings Moat Garden Village development on Wrexham Road in Chester.

The building, handed over to multi‑academy trust (MAT) Sandstone Trust, has placed energy efficiency at the forefront with LED lighting, air source heat pumps, and photovoltaic panels (PVs) installed.

A dedicated bike rack and multi-use games area (MUGA) are also included in the new school, and pupils will have access to shared outdoor communal spaces on the wider housing development including an artificial grass (3G) pitch, two playing fields, and a public park.

As part of Wynne Construction’s Futures Foundation, we offered 6 young people, a total of 23 weeks, with hands-on work experience via the Procure Plus Site Smart programme during the project build – an initiative designed to help those not in education, employment, or training (NEET) enter the construction industry.

Other social value activities included school engagement and pupils interactions through STEM activities at local schools, donations and volunteering with local communities groups included Lache Larder and support for the BBC’s DIY SOS programme with the The Joshua Tree charity.

Wynne Construction senior contracts manager Graham Dickson said: “It’s been a great collaborative effort with the Council and the Trust to deliver a high-quality building on time. With the main construction work now behind us, we’re just focusing on those final finishing touches to ensure the site is perfect for the staff and pupils come September.”

Entry into the school will commence in two phases, starting with reception and key stage one learners (half form entry) and 13 nursery children this Autumn, followed by an additional 105 places for youngsters as the housing village grows.

This will increase the total capacity of the Kings Moat Community Primary School to 315 pupils.

Kings Moat Community Primary School headteacher Ruth Cadwallader said: “It’s a wonderful moment to officially get the keys to this fantastic building. We have a clear vision for the school, and the environment we have here will certainly help us achieve that.

“Our focus is now on the practical preparations; we’re excited to welcome families to our parent information evenings and begin getting to know the children who will be joining us. Through a programme of transition sessions over the summer, we’ll ensure every child feels ready to start this exciting new chapter with us.”

Sandstone Trust chief executive officer Jason Lowe said: “Reaching this handover is a very proud moment for all of us. We have worked hard to create a school that really serves this community, and it is great to see it finally ready.

We are looking forward to opening our doors in September, and it is brilliant to now be at the stage where we can focus on welcoming our first families through the door.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council cabinet member for children and young people councillor Adam Langan said: “It’s an exciting moment to hand over this brand-new school to the Sandstone Trust ready for the children of the area to be welcomed in September. 

“The project has run smoothly, finishing ahead of schedule.  I wish the headteacher, teachers and support staff all the best for the years to come and hope the children who attend truly thrive.”
