Wynne Construction has been appointed to build a new Maggie’s cancer care facility in Merseyside as part of a £5million contract. Located at the junction of Daulby Street and Prescot Street in Liverpool, the scheme has been funded through the Steve Morgan Foundation.

The new 6,243sq ft centre will serve communities in North Merseyside and feature dedicated counselling spaces for confidential support sessions, exercise rooms, and group rooms, alongside breakout seating areas and an office, along with shared lounges and a communal kitchen.

Air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels (PVs) will be also installed to reduce the centre’s carbon footprint and improve its energy efficiency, whilst the gardens and landscaping aim to offer a tranquil experience for visitors.

To create a “home from home” feel, all feature joinery throughout the building will be bespoke and completed to a high standard.

Expected to complete by summer 2027, the programme marks Wynne Construction’s second scheme for Maggie’s following its delivery of the North Wales centre in September 2025.

A turf cutting ceremony was held on site to celebrate the start of the scheme’s construction phase with Wynne Construction managing director Chris Wynne in attendance.

He said: “We are delighted to be working once again with Maggie’s, with the valued support of the Steve Morgan Foundation. Without this generous support, centres like these would simply not be possible. Having experienced the positive impact of the new build Maggie’s centre in North Wales, it is a real privilege for Wynne Construction to help bring this important new facility to life.”

Dame Laura Lee DBE, Maggie’s chief executive said: “It is wonderful to officially start work on our centre in Liverpool today thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Steve Morgan Foundation and their commitment to commissioning, designing, building and funding three centres across Merseyside and north Wales.

“It is a truly phenomenal act of philanthropy which will ensure thousands of people are supported and find ways of experiencing the joy of living despite a daunting cancer diagnosis.

“To be able to celebrate today’s groundbreaking as part of Maggie’s 30th year of providing expert cancer support across the UK, and Steve Morgan Foundation’s 25th anniversary, is also very special.

“I am greatly looking forward to working closely once again with the Steve Morgan Foundation, and NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Liverpool hospital to ensure the people of Merseyside living with cancer have the support they need at what is possibly the hardest time of their lives.”

Steve Morgan CBE said: “We are delighted to see the build phase of the new Maggie’s centre get underway – a step closer to bringing vital cancer support to the people of Liverpool. This is our third Maggie’s centre in the region and a perfect example of the power of partnership and the difference it makes to our communities.”

Leanne Cooper, executive managing director of The Royal Liverpool and Liverpool Women’s University Hospitals said: “As part of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital demolition process, we have been working closely with partners to develop a masterplan that will have the health and wellbeing of our patients and local communities at its heart.

“We are delighted to be welcoming Maggie’s as the first new partner onto the site of the old Royal. The services they offer to support people with cancer will be hugely beneficial to the people of Liverpool.”

Rachael Mountford, who was supported by Maggie’s in Wirral after her husband Chris was diagnosed with incurable high grade brain cancer in December 2023, spoke at the groundbreaking event.

The mum-of-three said: “Maggie’s gave my husband and our family so much more than support, it gave us a place where cancer didn’t define us. Maggie’s gave us moments of laughter in the darkest chapter of our lives and now, as I navigate grief, Maggie’s continues to be there for me and my children. I honestly can’t imagine our journey without Maggie’s.”
