Wynne Construction was contracted for the design and build project at Parc Eirias on behalf of Conwy County Borough Council, the Welsh Assembly Strategic Regeneration Area fund and the Welsh Rugby Union.
The £6.5m cost for the project was funded by £3.8m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Welsh Assembly Government Targeted Match Fund. Funding was also secured from the Welsh Assembly Government Strategic Regeneration Area fund, Conwy County Borough Council and the Welsh Rugby Union. It is a key part of the Bay Life+ regeneration initiative for the Colwyn area
The project, situated at Parc Eirias in Colwyn Bay, involved the construction of a large multi-purpose indoor centre designed for use by all the community. This included conference and classroom facilities for business and commerce events, as well as a gym and high performance sports analysis facilities, where the Welsh Rugby Union has based its North Wales Rugby Academy. The development is designed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards.
Key Environmental Features include solar thermal, wind turbine, attenuation, low water demand sanitary installations, energy efficient services, high thermal resistance of building fabric and rainwater harvesting
Work started on site in February 2011 and was completed by October 2011. The official opening with Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones took place on 11th November 2011.
