Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan, Llanfaethlu

Education North Wales
Value: < £5m
BIM, Sustainability, BREEAM: Excellent, MMC

Wynne Construction was appointed by Anglesey County Council to build the new area school Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan, in the village of Llanfaethlu. The £4.5m new build school replaced three existing schools of Ysgol Llanfachraeth, Ysgol Ffrwd Win and Ysgol Cylch Y Garn.

The project involved the construction of a single storey community primary school for 150 pupils and 20 nursery places who will benefit from the latest facilities and resources. The school opened in September 2017 and was part funded by the Welsh Government through the 21st Century Schools Programme.

A BREEAM Excellent rating for the new building was achieved by using renewable technologies (PV panels and air source heat pumps), managing the ecological impact, sustainable procurement, waste management and energy efficiency. The low carbon design was adhered to throughout construction to a final EPC rating of A scoring 13 - compared to the required benchmark of 33.

Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan is the first full school in the UK to be constructed from straw bale panels. This is a zero waster to landfill system. The completed school is a highly sustainable and renewable building.

The Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan project won Constructing Excellence in Wales and Constructing Excellence National Sustainability Award 2018.
