An aspiring electrician has turned his week’s work experience into an apprenticeship after spending time on a Wynne Construction site.
Adrian Hul applied for the five-day placement to progress his electrical knowledge, and the construction firm paired him with supply chain partner System Electrical.
Required to complete 315 hours of industry experience as part of his studies at Cheshire College South and West, the 18-year-old originally completed 49 hours at Wynne’s £13.5m Great Sutton Medical Centre project in Cheshire.
After impressing colleagues in his initial week, Adrian was invited back to complete the remaining time and has since been rewarded with an apprenticeship with System Electrical.
Adrian, who lives in Chester and studied an Engineering and Manufacturing T Level, specialising in electrical and electronic engineering, said: “I applied for the work experience to progress with my knowledge, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to get out on a site.
“To have gone from a placement to an apprenticeship is amazing. I know how lucky I am, as a lot of my friends are struggling to get similar roles because it’s tough out there at the moment.”
Adrian has become a huge advocate for pupils to gain on-site experience and is grateful to Wynne Construction and System Electrical for allowing him to have valuable insight into the industry.
He added: “Wynne Construction provided me with access to health and safety training and accreditation as well as helping me gain my CSCS card through Procure Plus.
“Being on a site is a huge switch from the classroom. For me, it was so much better, as working on live projects and being hands on is something I love.
“When the medical centre is finished, it will be nice to know I played a role in building something that will be used by the community.
“I found the experience fun and exciting, but for it to lead to an apprenticeship is something I didn’t think would happen.”
Great Sutton Health and Wellbeing Village will be one of the first sites of its kind.
Consisting of a purpose-built medical centre with a pharmacy and other health-related organisations, it will allow the current GP practice to expand its services whilst helping to provide additional services to the Ellesmere Port locality.
The site will also include a purpose-built village hall and scout hut, football pitches with changing facilities, and community allotments.
The wellbeing village will be working together alongside a newly established Community Interest Company (CIC) to maximise the use of the site for the health and wellbeing of the local community.
Jodi Hamilton, social value manager at Wynne Construction, said: “Hearing stories like Adrian’s is exactly why we partner closely with our higher and further education partners and supply chain.
“Work experience is invaluable for pupils to gain an understanding of what being in a live construction environment is like.
“When it plays a critical role in someone securing employment, it demonstrates perfectly the impact volunteering for work experience can have and what positive outcomes there can be.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Steve Kemp, site manager, and the wider team at Great Sutton for accommodating Adrian, and to and System Electrical for proactively taking up a budding, capable student who was keen to use the opportunity to learn the trade and impress.”
