Wynne Construction has completed work on a UK cancer charity’s first North Wales support centre.

The Denbighshire-based firm was appointed to deliver the £4 million Maggie’s project by the Steve Morgan Foundation on a design and build contract, with work commencing in autumn last year.

Based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, the new building will enable the charity to provide a range of courses and services to support those diagnosed with cancer, as well as their loved ones.

The new centre can accommodate between 40 to 50 people at any given time and is set to offer bespoke expert advice and guidance to help people cope with their diagnosis, and one to one sessions with cancer support specialists.

Air source heat pumps and 40 photovoltaic (PV) panels with an output of 8.4kW were installed at the 550sq metre site to help lower the building’s carbon footprint and supply renewable energy.

Youngsters were also on hand to help deliver the scheme, with two apprentices in the groundworks and electrical trades joining a team of up to 40 people.

Wynne Construction director David Wynne said: “Our team’s strategic planning was crucial to progressing construction on the live site, which presented several complex challenges including existing ground services, such as power and water mains, a busy public car park, the hospital’s main entrance road, and A&E ambulance routes.

“In addition, we implemented partial road closures and continued works at night to minimise disruption and ensure a safe route for ambulances.

“Overall, it’s been a very rewarding development and one we are proud to have completed on time and within the client’s budget. Working alongside the Steve Morgan Foundation for the first time has been brilliant, and it’s a relationship we hope will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Chairman of the Steve Morgan Foundation, Steve Morgan, said: “It’s wonderful to have the new Maggie’s centre in North Wales open.

“We are very excited to see this centre doing what it has been designed to do, supporting people with cancer at possibly the hardest time of their lives.”
