Wynne Construction has successfully completed major re-development works at Ysgol Treferthyr in Criccieth.
The £8.8 million project saw the Denbighshire-based construction company prioritise sustainability with energy efficient hybrid ventilation units installed throughout the building and photovoltaic panels (PVs) fitted to produce up to 90kwh.
In addition, the site now features electric charging points, underfloor heating, and a tarmac drainage system helping prevent flooding by allowing moisture to be naturally absorbed.
Staff and pupils will also benefit from a multi-use games area (MUGA) and a football pitch, with both developed using repurposed topsoil.
Funded by Welsh Government Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and Cyngor Gwynedd, Wynne Construction further improved the school through the development of a new early years unit and an additional learning support centre.
Following its appointment by Cyngor Gwynedd, the family-run firm built Ysgol Treferthyr in accordance with BREEAM Excellent standards.
Wynne Construction site manager Aled Roberts said: “We were able to develop an eco-conscious school as well as reduce our carbon emissions throughout our supply chain by engaging with local North Wales businesses.
“In addition, our work saw us help five apprentices gain hands-on experience and an understanding of what environmentally friendly construction looks like.
“The team have delivered another high-quality build, and I’m proud of their efforts, particularly overcoming challenges such as discovering a series of underground pipes and working around these and dealing with equipment related to an old railway line next to the MUGA.
Wynne Construction project manager Andy Lea said: “The site team have done a fantastic job to deliver Ysgol Treferthyr in time for the new academic year, and we hope the pupils and staff enjoy their modern and inspirational school building.
“It’s been brilliant to work closely with Cyngor Gwynedd again as well as the local supply chain and community, where we have strived to leave a lasting legacy through job and training opportunities.”
Lynne Neagle MS, Welsh Government cabinet secretary for education, said: “It is fantastic we have been able to support this new school. The use of green technology is important to me as by building sustainable schools we’re providing for the future.
“Combined with great teaching and learning, these state-of-the-art facilities can help ensure that our children get the best education possible and I hope it will help the learners and wider community to thrive.”
The headteacher of Ysgol Treferthyr, Dylan Roberts, said: “We are all looking forward to the next exciting period as we move to Ysgol Treferthyr’s new premises. There are great resources here that are suitable for the twenty first century.
“As a school, we are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to getting the school ready. We look forward to providing education and creating unforgettable experiences for the children of Ysgol Treferthyr at our new site.”
