Site managers attain key career milestone

Wynne Construction has significantly enhanced project practices by supporting a trio of employees to secure their NVQ Level 6 in site management.

The degree-level qualification was undertaken by site managers Martin Roberts, Paul McCaffrey, and John Watts who each built a portfolio of evidence for submission whilst continuing their day-to-day roles.

Delivered by training provider 3B Training, the accreditation assessed key aspects of the job including maintaining high health and safety standards, demonstrating environmental responsibility, effective planning and resourcing, site set-up, quality of work, customer satisfaction, and successful client handovers.

Martin, who joined the Denbighshire-based firm 21 years ago as a bricklaying apprentice, completed the course whilst working on the £8m Enterprise, Engineering, and Optics Centre (EEOC) for Wrexham University.

He said: “Having gained my NVQ Level 4 in site management back in 2022, I wanted to continue my career progression and the team at Wynne Construction were fantastic at making the necessary arrangements for me to do that.

“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity, and the whole process will help me fulfil my role better, as it has both reinforced what I already knew and introduced me to new ways of working.”

Paul, who earned the qualification during construction of the £12.2m Pontllanfraith Centre for Vulnerable Learners in Caerphilly, shared a similar sentiment.

He said: “Upon joining the firm three years ago, the qualification was mentioned to me from day one.

“As an established business, Wynne Construction has all the procedures and relevant paperwork in place, making it considerably more straightforward for me to complete the NVQ.

“The team were also supportive in other ways, as I could speak to colleagues in different departments for advice or insight, such as the HSEQ team for health and safety queries, which was brilliant.

“Overall, I’m glad to have earned the accreditation, which I believe helps showcase my knowledge, and I’m looking forward to continuing my development within the company.”

Also passing the course in South Wales was John, who undertook the NVQ Level 6 at the £25m Sunnyside Wellness Village in Bridgend.

He said: “I first worked alongside Wynne Construction subcontracting in 2013 as a self-employed joiner and later accepted the offer to join the firm in a full-time position.

“Throughout my career with the company, I’ve been supported to take on relevant training and, with both me and the firm suggesting the NVQ during an appraisal, I was keen to complete it to expand my understanding of the industry and help me apply for a black CSCS card.”
